Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1 Update 3 Release Notes (x86 Edition)

Copyright (c) 2003 Red Hat, Inc.

     ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Introduction

The following topics are covered in this document:

o Changes to the Red Hat Enterprise Linux installation program
       (Anaconda)

     o General information

o Changes to drivers and hardware support

     o Changes to packages

Changes to the Red Hat Enterprise Linux installation program (Anaconda)

The following section includes information specific to the Red Hat
   Enterprise Linux installation program, Anaconda.

  Note

In order to upgrade an already-installed Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1
system to Update 3, you must use Red Hat Network to update those packages
that have changed. The use of Anaconda to upgrade to Update 3 is not
   supported.

Use Anaconda only to perform a fresh install of Red Hat Enterprise Linux
   2.1 Update 3.

General Information

This section contains general information not specific to any other
   section of this document.

o Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1 Update 3 includes support for Serial ATA
(SATA) devices via the Intel ICH5 Serial ATA controller. This
controller is found in many systems, including most of the latest
Dell, HP, and IBM workstations. In order to ensure proper detection
and operation of all storage devices, the system BIOS should be
configured for "Enhanced mode" or "SATA-only mode." The "Legacy mode"
and/or "Combined mode" settings should not be used.

Changes to Drivers and Hardware Support

This update includes bug fixes for a number of drivers. The more
significant driver updates are listed below. In some cases, the original
driver has been preserved under a different name, and is available as a
non-default alternative for organizations that wish to migrate their
driver configuration to the latest versions at a later time.

  Note

The migration to the latest drivers should be completed before the next
Red Hat Enterprise Linux update is applied, because in most cases only one
older-revision driver will be preserved for each update.

   Intel PRO/100 (e100 driver)

o The e100 driver has been updated from 2.2.21-k1 to 2.3.30-k1

o The new driver is addon/e100_2330k1/e100.o

o The older driver has been preserved as addon/e100/e100_2221k1.o

o The 2.1.24-k2 driver is also available as
       addon/e100_2124k2/e100_2124k2.o

   Intel PRO/1000 (e1000 driver)

o The e1000 driver has been updated from 5.0.43-k1 to 5.2.20-k1

o The ips 4.80.26 driver (ips_48026.o) has been deleted

Adaptec SCSI Adapters (aic7xxx and aic79xx drivers)

o The default aic7xxx driver is the "old" driver, named scsi/aic7xxx.o.
This driver remains at version 5.2.4.

  Note

Some older models of Adaptec adapters operate better with the old
aic7xxx driver. Newer Adaptec models may operate better with the newer
       driver, called aic7xxx_mod.

o The aic7xxx_mod driver has been updated from 6.2.30 to 6.2.36

o The new driver is scsi/aic7xxx/aic7xxx_mod.o

       addon/aic7xxx/aic7xxx_mod_6230.o

o The aic79xx driver has been updated from 1.3.4 to 1.3.10

o The new driver is scsi/aic7xxx/aic79xx.o

o The cciss driver has been updated from 2.4.45 to 2.4.49

o The new driver is addon/cciss/cciss.o

o The older driver has been preserved as block/cciss_2445.o

o The 2.4.27 driver has been deleted
